Research Log 2:
1. How can a balance be achieved between protecting privacy and meeting the needs of national security? I think a balance is achieved by national security watching what we research. I do not care if they watch every move I make on my computer; as long as they are keeping my country safe and making sure there are no threats being made. I would rather that than no monitoring at all. I know that would not necessarily be a balance, but it would be safer for everyone.
2. How did you react to the list of challenged books (were you surprised, for example)? Do you think some books should be banned or should all books be freely available? Why? I thought the list of challenged books was interesting because I have read a few of them. I think that they should all be available for readers because it is our choice of what we want to read; nobody is forced to read a certain book. If one reads the back of a book and sees that they do not like what it is about, then they have the choice to put it down; or if you are in the middle of a book and you decide it is too sexual, or racist it is your choice to close it an never read it again.
3. How have your overall ideas about information ethics changed or not changed after completing this unit? In this unit, I found it really interesting that in the fair use of music you can use up to 30 seconds of music without going over the copyright law. That caught my attention because I know someone in a video class that used music and the teacher would not let him use more that 30 seconds worth of one song, but he could never figure out why.

Unit 6 Assignment Information Ethics

Research Log 1

1. Discuss how the author, the publisher, the faculty member, the library, and the students can be accommodated.

The author and/or publisher should raise the price of their textbooks and course readers so they can make a better profit.

The faculty members should be able to find the books for their students and themselves at a reasonable price.

The students should be able to access the books on-line and at the bookstore for a cheaper price.

2. How can a fair arrangement be achieved?

Have the author and publisher actually start the book and course reader on-line so that they don’t have to worry about making or losing money. The teachers can use their projectors to show what they need from the books in class and the students can print pages from their course readers at home to bring to class. The library can also be used for printing pages from books or course readers when needed.

3. What are the challenges in creating a fair arrangement for everyone?

Books will not be needed anymore which makes us rely more on the internet. When the computers and internet are broken down there is not as much class work. We will rely too much on technology.

5. Once you got your results to around 100 (or fewer), how did you determine they were meaningful? I decided if the articles were meaningful by looking at their publication dates and the writer’s credibility.

There was reasonable evidence in the articles that proved everything. The publication date was a little ways back but the writers all had a good background and it was a good source.

How did you determine these articles were meaningful? The writers were all involve in science and some had PhD’s so they should know what they were talking about. There was also a lot of data analysis.

Unit 4 Part 1 - Periodicals and General Databases

Research Log Entry 1

1. What three periodicals did you choose?

I chose Newsweek, American Bar Association Journal, and The Journal of Comparative Psychology for my three periodicals.

2. Name three articles, one from each of the three journals you chose.

The three articles I chose were “The Abortion Wars Get Technical” from Newsweek, “Role of nasal chemical senses in garter snakes response to airborne odor cues from prey” from The Journal of Comparative Psychology, and “Gun Control vs. Gun Prohibition” from the American Bar Association Journal.

3. What are the major differences among these articles?

The difference between these articles was the way they were written. Some were more written based on fact rather than opinion. One was an actual scientific study whereas the other two were generally argumentative essays.

4. What are the major differences among these periodicals?

The major differences among these periodicals were their formatting. There were different types of pictures in them and some were less formally written than others. It seemed like The American Bar Association Journal was more for adults and harder to understand. The Journal of Comparative Psychology is something I would only read if I was taking a class that required it.

These writers seemed like they had plenty of scientific research for their explanations. They all had degrees from Universities so they were well educated and it is a well-informed article.

7. How did you determine this article was meaningful?

The book is based a lot on statistics so there is a lot of useful information in it. The author also went is a graduate and has written other books of this type with great information on the source.
